“My dad was a visionary – and I’m forever grateful for that”
When Alex’s father made the bold move from caged hens to free-range hens back in 1997, he was a true pioneer.
“Many thought it would never work. But here we are, 27 years later – that says a lot!” says Alex, who now runs Melin’s farm.
An industry in transformation
The egg industry has seen some dramatic changes over the years, and Alex has witnessed this evolution firsthand. Since taking over the farm in 2015, things have been running full speed ahead.
About 3,400 eggs are collected daily – talk about a lot of omelets!
But it’s not just the eggs that make the farm special. A few years ago, Alex opened a small farm shop where customers can buy fresh, locally-produced eggs through a convenient self-service system.
And success came quickly – thousands of customers visit every year!
The farm shop – a crucial piece of the puzzle
While the farm shop accounts for a smaller share of sales, it plays a vital role in keeping the business afloat.
It highlights just how important community support is – something many people clearly value.
Local is the new black
In recent years, interest in buying local has skyrocketed. More and more people want to know where their food comes from, enjoy fresh ingredients, and support local producers.
And Alex isn’t alone – many small producers have also opened their own farm shops.
